Water and electricity are an unforgiving mix. Plug tank heaters only into an outdoor-rated, GFCI-protected receptacle, exactly as the manufacturer's manual directs — US electrical code (NEC) requires GFCI protection on outdoor outlets. Never splice, extend or modify the cord beyond what the manual allows, and keep cords where stock can't chew them. A heater that keeps tripping the GFCI is leaking current: replace the heater, never bypass the protection. For anything involving the outlet or wiring itself, use a licensed electrician.

Energy-free waterers assume the heater goes away entirely; they need a proper install (concrete pad, buried water line) and enough drinking traffic to stay ice-free, so treat that payback as a best case.

Why not just multiply rated watts by 24 hours?

Because nearly every stock tank heater has a built-in thermostat that switches the element on only while the water is near freezing, and off once it recovers — typically holding the water around 40°F. The hours it actually heats (the duty cycle) depend on your weather, tank surface and wind, and are usually a fraction of the day. Rated-watts-times-24 arithmetic overstates a properly sized heater's bill severalfold. That's also why this tool doesn't ask you for “hours per day” the way most calculators do: that number is the answer to the problem, not something you can look up.

Does a bigger heater cost more to run?

Mostly no. Two thermostatic heaters keeping the same tank thawed in the same weather replace the same lost heat, so they use about the same energy — the 1,500 W element just cycles on for fewer hours than a 500 W one. The real cost risk runs the other way: an undersized heater runs flat-out around the clock, the water can still ice over, and you get the worst of both. When this tool's estimated heat loss exceeds your element's wattage it flags that for you.

Is it safe to plug a tank heater in outdoors?

Follow the manufacturer's manual exactly — the major makers (Allied Precision, K&H Pet Products and others) all specify a grounded, outdoor-rated receptacle and an intact, unmodified cord, and US electrical code requires outdoor receptacles to be GFCI-protected. If your heater repeatedly trips a GFCI, that's the device telling you current is leaking somewhere it shouldn't: replace the heater rather than working around the outlet. Nothing on this page is wiring advice — for the receptacle, the circuit, or anything behind the wall plate, bring in a licensed electrician.

What about a thermostatically controlled outlet?

A plug-through thermostat (Thermo Cube–style) powers the outlet only when the air drops to about 35°F and cuts it at about 45°F. For a heater that already has a good built-in thermostat, it mostly trims shoulder-season standby; the savings are modest. Where it earns its keep is with heaters or birdbath-style devices that lack a thermostat of their own, and as cheap insurance against a stuck-on element. It's a plug-in device, not a wiring change.

How accurate are these estimates?

They're honest roughs, not meter readings. The model estimates heat loss from your tank's surface area, the freeze-hours and typical freeze temperature of your climate band, and a wind/insulation factor, then converts that to run-hours and kWh — calibrated so a 100-gallon tank with a 1,500 W de-icer lands in the ranges extension services and owners commonly report (a few dollars a month in mild winters, tens of dollars in deep cold). Real bills move with wind, sun, tank material, how often stock drink (every refill arrives cold), and your actual weather — which is why every figure here is a range, never a single number.
