Age is a probability, not a diagnosis — this tool can never tell you a battery is good or dead. Most car batteries last 3–5 years, failures commonly start from year 4–5, and a cold snap is what exposes a weak one. A free load test at any auto-parts store beats the calendar: a tested-good battery at year 5 can outlast an untested one at year 3. Whatever the date says, test before winter.
Why is the date written in code?
The stamp exists for factory and warranty tracking, not for you — there is no industry standard, so each maker (really, each of the handful of companies that build most North American batteries, Clarios and East Penn chief among them) uses its own shorthand. Two conventions cover most batteries: a month letter plus a year digit (A=January through M=December, with I skipped so it can't be mistaken for a 1), or Optima's year digit followed by the day of the year. The catch is that the year is a single digit — which is why this tool shows two candidate decades instead of pretending to know.
Why can't it tell 2013 from 2023?
Because the code genuinely can't: a year digit of 3 means any year ending in 3. This tool shows both plausible candidates with the age each would imply, and lets context decide — a battery bought new in the last ten years is almost always the newer date, while the older date only fits a car or shelf find that has genuinely sat for a decade (and a battery that old is past typical life regardless). The punched sticker or your receipt settles it for certain. Any decoder that silently picks one decade is guessing.
Date of manufacture vs date of sale
The stamped or engraved code is the manufacture date. The round punched sticker is usually added at the store when the battery is sold or installed. They legitimately differ by a few months, because batteries sit on shelves — which is also why a "new" battery is worth checking before you buy it.
What about my warranty?
Free-replacement warranties run from the date of purchase, not the stamp — keep the receipt. Without one, stores typically fall back on the date code or the punched sticker (some punch it at sale for exactly this reason). If the code makes the battery look older than your receipt says, the receipt wins.
Why do batteries die in winter?
Cold doesn't ruin a battery — it exposes one that summer already weakened. Heat accelerates internal corrosion and water loss; then the first cold snap raises the cranking load while cutting the power the battery can deliver, and a battery at reduced capacity that started fine in October fails in January. That's why the 3–5 year window matters most going into winter, and why a load test each fall from year 3 on is cheap insurance.
Should I replace it just because it's old?
No. Have it load-tested — most auto-parts stores do it free in minutes, and a tested battery beats a dated one every time. Age alone is only a reason to replace when the battery is well past year 5 and being stranded would be costly.
Are these figures official?
No. The schemes here come from published date-code charts, which occasionally disagree by brand and era — where they conflict (some charts don't skip the letter I), this tool shows the alternative month rather than picking silently. Everything is an estimate, not maintenance advice; the punched sticker, your receipt, or the manufacturer's support line outranks it.
