What is the passport 6 month rule?
Many countries require your passport to remain valid for a period beyond your trip, not just during it. The most common versions: 6 months beyond your entry date (China, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, India and much of Asia and the Middle East), 6 months beyond your planned exit (Singapore, the Philippines, Israel), 3 months beyond your exit (the Schengen area in Europe), and valid for the duration of your stay only (the US, UK, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia). Airlines enforce these rules at check-in, so falling short usually means denied boarding rather than a refusal at the border.
Is the rule the same for every nationality?
No. Bilateral agreements exempt some nationalities from the 6-month rule in some countries, and a few destinations apply stricter rules to specific passports. This calculator encodes the typical rule for each destination; always confirm the rule for your passport with the destination's embassy or the IATA Travel Centre before booking.
How long does a passport renewal take?
US State Department routine processing is currently about 4–6 weeks (expedited 2–3 weeks), plus up to two weeks of mailing time in each direction — so a routine renewal can take 8–10 weeks door to door. Check current processing times. If your margin is under a month, renew before you book.
