Assumptions & FAQ

Why include the annual fee? My gym is "$10 a month".

Because most budget chains charge one. The famous $10-a-month gyms typically add an "annual fee" or "maintenance fee" of around $49 once a year — that alone adds about $4 a month, a 40% jump on the headline price. Joining fees work the same way, just spread over your whole time as a member. This calculator folds both in so the per-visit number reflects what actually leaves your bank account.

I've already paid — why think per visit at all?

The fee is a sunk cost this month either way, and skipping the gym doesn't get it back. But cost per visit is the honest measure of what the membership is worth to you, and it's the right number to look at when renewal comes around: if you're paying $27 per visit, day passes — or a cheaper gym — beat your current deal. If you're paying $4, your membership is excellent value. It also cuts the other way: going more is the one lever that makes every visit cheaper.

How does this compare to a day pass?

The comparison line uses a typical US walk-in range of $10–25 per day pass. That's a rough, static range — not live pricing — and day passes aren't a perfect substitute: they usually exclude classes and guest privileges, and some gyms don't offer them at all. Treat the comparison as a sanity check, not financial advice.
